[edit] Discussion Group Overview

[edit] What is a Discussion?

The Discussions module provides threaded discussion groups within a Workspace. The discussions are secured to the members of the Workspace. Discussions that take place in email are often lost or deleted over time, so this feature allows for more organization and knowledge capture.

In Project.net you have the ability to create different discussion groups within a business or project. This feature helps improve team collaboration. Since discussions that take place in email are often lost or deleted over time, discussion groups act like a record for future reference. Team members can discuss on various topics by creating different discussion topics and these discussions are secured to the members of the relevant workspace. The discussion module lists the discussion groups available in the workspace with the following information:

  • Group names
  • Total number of posts
  • Total number of unread posts
  • Group description.

In this module, members can create, edit and delete group. Also they have the ability to view the discussion group.

The DISCUSSIONS page lists the discussion groups available in the Workspace. The listing includes the group names, total number of posts, number of posts the current user has not read, and a group description. To enter a discussion group, click on the group’s name.

[edit] Reading and Posting to a Discussion Group

The bottom frame contains the post header (from, date created, subject) and the post body. URLs in the post body are hyper linked so these links are directly accessible to the reader. The post list can be traversed from the bottom frame by using the "Previous Post" and "Next Post" links.

[edit] Available Views

There are three different views available for the posts listed within a discussion group.

Threaded (default)

In this default view, posts are displayed in a threaded list where each reply is indented under its parent. This is an interactive threaded display where the users can collapse/expand threads by clicking on the appropriate post icon. Icons containing a (+) can be expanded. Icons containing a (-) can be collapsed.

Flat view

All posts are displayed in a single linear list in chronological order.

Unread first view

All posts are displayed in a single linear list, like the flat view; however unread posts precede read posts.

Clicking on a link in the discussion group listing checks to determine if the user has permission to view the discussion group. If a user does have the appropriate permission, a split frame is presented. The top frame contains a listing of posts in the group and the bottom frame contains the current post.
